Appointed major on the staff of Brig.-Gen. Ben F. Loan; then lieutenant - colonel (aftardward colonel) of the Fifth Regiment Cavalry, Missouri State Militia, a regiment he raised for the service of the United States; later colonel of a regiment in the service of the State and a Brigadier - general of militia in Northwestern Missouri fighting guerrillas under Todd, Quantrill and others, throughout Platte, Clay, Cass and Jackson Counties.
William was Buchanan County Coroner for four years. William served one year as a member of St. Joseph, Missouri City council. His labor and influence during his two year administration as mayor in St. Joseph organized a paid Fire Department. William lived at 412 South Ninth Street in St. Joseph, Missouri from aproximatly 1867 to 1882. He later lived at 1612 Francis Street in St. Joseph, Missouri with his mother. William died Dec. 4th, 1901.
