Following Naval training at Pensacola, Florida, Ensign Hatley was assigned gunnery officer aboard US Navy Submarine Chaser PC-824. The ship saw substantial action in the Pacific Theater, including engagements at Truk, Saipan, Guam, and Iwo Jima.
Hatley left active-duty service after the war, returned to UT, and finished his degree with the class of 1947; the couple then moved to Dallas and raised a family. Their first child, Brennon Philip was born in 1948; a second, Mark in 1953, and twins Paul and Christopher in 1956.
Hatley was employed first at Lone Star Gas Company, and then he served as Executive Vice President for Economic Development with the Dallas Chamber of Commerce. As an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation and later St. Luke's Episcopal Church, he served on the Vestry for several years and was a member of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew.
Hatley is preceded in death by his wife Josephine and is survived by his four sons: Philip, Mark, Christopher, and Paul and six grandchildren.
