John S. Gilstrap was the son of Benson and Esther Reid Gilstrap, and the husband of Mary Stewart Gilstrap. He had lived in Liberty for 32 years and was retired from textile work. He was also a member of Rice's Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving him at the time of his death were his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Mary Welborn and Mrs. Elvira Collins, both of Liberty; three sons, Willie Gilstrap and Robert Gilstrap of Pickens and Henry Gilstrap of Big Estatoe; 32 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

His funeral was held Friday, June 8, 1956 at
the First Baptist Church in Liberty, conducted by Rev. A.B. Couch.

Burial: West View Cemetery, Liberty.
