Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Lippincott was trained as a physician, having graduated from St. Louis Medical College in 1849. When the Civil War broke out, he was made a colonel of the 33rd Illinois Infantry Regiment. Because of the educational level of the regiment, it was referred to as the "Brains Regiment." Lippincott provided distinguished service at the battles of Port Gibson, Champion Hill, and Vicksburg. In the last months of the war, he participated in the seige of Mobile and related battles of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely. On February 17, 1865 he was made a brevet brigadier general for services rendered during the war. After the war, he served as Illinois State Auditor from 1869 until 1877.
