Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. When the Civil War broke out, Taylor joined the 2nd Ohio Infantry as a 1st lieutenant. His leadership skills were recognized and he was named a colonel in the newly formed 30th Ohio Infantry in late 1861. His service in West Virginia was cut short when he was called to Columbus to help form the 40th Ohio Infantry. He led that unit in the Nashville, Chattanooga and Atlanta campaigns. On March 4, 1865, he organized the 188th Ohio Infantry Regiment which did provost duty in central Tennessee for the remainder of the war. The 188th served in Murfreesboro, Tullahoma, and Nashville until it was mustered out of service on September 28, 1865. Taylor was made a brevet brigadier general on March 13, 1865 in recognition of "gallant and meritorious services during the war."
