Son of William Andrew Jackson Hughes and Rhoda Gilbert. Grandson of Lawson S. Hughes and Nancy McCasland Hughes. Married Edna Irene Smith, the only woman in his life, in Dec 1947. Father of Mary Beth Anders, Francis Stephen Hughes, Janice Talley, Judy Herrington, and David Hughes. Served in the Army during WWII in Italy, France and Northern Africa.

As the oldest son, Daddy was named for both his grandfathers Lawson Suttle Hughes and Francis Warren Gilbert.

Daddy was gentle and the most moral man I ever knew, though my brother Steve comes close. Mama and Daddy had a tumulutous, on-again/off-again relationship. Through it all, he never loved anyone else. His last words to me were about her.

After I married and had children, he would come see us on the weekend often and always brought bananas, and oatmeal cookies for the kids and cokes for me. He was a regular guest at our Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. He was a big part of our lives and I miss him very much. He was a pleasure to cook for and his appetite was a pleasure to watch. He loved his children and his grandchildren and was always there for us, even though he was not very verbal with his love, you just knew it from his actions.

I realize he was not perfect, since no one is and Mama said so, but he was close enough for me. I miss him deeply. His death is something I will never get used to. How do you get used to not belonging to someone anymore? And in spite of the void left, I know he is ok, I know I will see him again. We one day will be reunited through the blood of Jesus. All old things will be passed away, age, infirmity, old heartaches, for Jesus will wipe away every tear. Only the love will remain. I look forward to that day.
