Author. She was a prolific American author who wrote 93 novels in her long career, many of which became best sellers. She worked for several San Francisco, California newspapers before marrying author Charles Gilman Norris in 1909. She met her husband while they were students at the University of California at Berkeley. She primarily wrote novels but also short stories and one play and contributed to magazines. Her published works include "Mother" in 1911, "The Callahans and The Murphys" in 1924, "The Foolish Virgin" in 1928, "My San Francisco" in 1932, "Bread Into Roses" in 1937, "The Venables" in 1941 and "Family Gatherings" in 1959. Several of her novels were adapted into silent films, including "The Callahans and The Murphys." She was one of the highest-paid authors of her era. Her collections are stored in the Special Collections Departments of the University of California, Los Angeles, and Stanford University. She was the mother to a son and twin daughters, who only lived for a few days, and obtained guardianship of two nieces and a nephew after her sister's 1919 death.
