Thomas Joseph was born in Kilpatrick, Westmeath, Ireland to his parents William Lynch and Mary Lynch (nee Carroll). He migrated to the United States in 1927. He made the journey with his sister Anna aboard the White Star Line ship RMS Celtic. He worked as a longshoreman on the Manhattan docks.
Married Jeanette Helen Lynch (nee Metz). This marriage produced four children: Thomas, Patricia, Helen and William.
