Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in Company G, 95th Ohio Infantry, Union Army. On December 16, 1864, the 95th Ohio was ordered to assault the Confederates at Nashville, Tennessee. During the conflict Private Smith in the advance column, captured the flag of the 6th Florida Infantry. For bravery in action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on February 24, 1865.
