Jennie Lee "Bessie" SELBY was the 5th of 7 children born to John James SELBY and his 1st wife Sophia Weatherford HOLLOWAY. When she was about 4 yrs old her mom died and in 1886 her dad married Martha Ann BROCK, who had 5 more children. Bess said she worked like their 2nd mother and she cared for many Elias BROCK children too.
Martha's older sister, Mary Elizabeth BROCK, dau of Elias Franklin BROCK, married George W. ASHLEY in 1883. George was the son of James Robert & Minerva BARFIELD and had a younger brother William Amato Fletcher ASHLEY, b 1874. When Will was 23, and Bessie was sweet 16, they married on 5/Jun/1898 in Falls County, TX and had 5 children. They eventually joined the rest of the family in the Pelly-Baytown, TX area where Will also worked for Humble Oil.
Their children were Ernest Preston Roland ASHLEY (1899-1971); Lola James [MILLER] (1903-1973); Fanny Lee [CATES] (1906-1991); Minnie Mae [NUNEZ] [SIMS](1908-1996) and Georgie Minerva [HEMMENWAY] (1911-1939)
