Enos was my 2nd Great-Grandfather
He was the third of ten children born to John Enos CAMPBELL (1791-1870) and Elizabeth MITCHELL Campbell (1800-1870).
He was married to Matilda Tabatha Hill when he was 22 years old in January 1853 in Georgia, USA.
Enos and Matilda had six children together:
Charles H. Campbell (c1853-bef 1899), wife Ellen P. Hawthorn; John E. Daniel "Dan" Campbell (1855-1930), wives 1) Martha Beashears 2) Mary L. "Mollie" Gilcrease 3) May Clark; Archibald Thomas "Archie" Campbell (1856-1913), wives 1) Lucinda Bellezora "Lucy" Brashears 2) Rachael M. Holder; Richard Wiseman "Dick" Campbell (1858-1922), wives 1) Lillie UNKNOWN 2) Anna Valera "Annie" Poindexter; Mary Elizabeth Campbell (1861-1934), husband George Washington Cornelison; Caroline M. "Carrie" Campbell (1864-1900), husbands 1) John Davis Phipps 2) John Collet.
Enos served in the Civil War in Company E, 39th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, Walker County, Georgia, known as the "Walker Light Guards". The regiment was led by his wife's brother, Captain Charles D. Hill. Another of his wife's brother's was also in the regiment, Private James B. Hill. Enos was captured near LaFayette, GA, on Dec. 5, 1863. He died at the age of 33 years old of smallpox in Rock Island prison, Jan. 8, 1865.
Family stories have always said that Enos was sneaking home at night to visit his family, since his regiment was stationed nearby. Some men in his regiment were jealous of him, so they turned Enos over to the North. Matilda and the children moved to Texas soon after the war ended.
