College Football Hall of Fame Member. Born in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, he was a two-time All-American football wide-end receiver for the University of Minnesota in 1915 and 1916. During World War I, he served as a First Lieutenant in Company 17, 5th Regiment, US Marines Corps. On June 6, 1918, he suffered a critical leg wound in actions at the Battle of Belleau Woods, France, while leading his platoon. He refused treatment until he had personally assured himself that every man in his platoon was under cover and in a safe position. For extraordinary heroism, he was awarded the Navy Cross Medal. After his war duties, he was unable to continue playing football due to his injuries. However, he returned to the University of Minnesota and served as assistant head coach for 18 years. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. He died in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
