Judge Lanier, former district attorney emeritus of Georgia’s Middle Judicial Circuit and one of the first mayors of Metter, died Sunday at the Candler County Hospital.
He served as judge of the city court in Metter for several years and as solicitor general from 1936 to 1960.
A native of Bullock County, Judge Lanier graduated from Lumpkin Law School at the University of Georgia in 1913, and beginning in 1918, served two terms as mayor of Metter. He was judge of the city court form 1920 to 1929.
He was past president of the Middle Circuit Bar Association, a member of the District Attorneys’ Association and past chairman of the Metter School Board.
Judge Lanier became a partner in private practice with his son, the late Dan L. Lanier, also a former solicitor general, and remained with the firm until his son’s death in 1967.
Judge Lanier was a member of Metter United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee, chairman of the administrative board and teacher of the Adult Sunday School class. He was a charter member of the Metter Kiwanis Club.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Patriel May Jones Lanier; daughters, Mrs. Lawton Pearson and Mrs. Jewell Bird McMinn, both of Fort Valley; son, Albert Lanier of San Francisco; step-daughters, Mrs. Leon Mills of Smyrna, Mrs. Robert L. Trapnell, Mrs. V.H. Hooks, Jr., and Mrs. William L. “Bill” Lanier, all of Metter; and sister, Mrs. Grady Johnson of Twin City.
