Rev. Thomas Haughey Starbuck, 87, died yesterday on the 59th anniversary of his wedding to Almira Gibson. He had been prominent in the work of the Seventh-Day-Adventist church since his affiliation with it in 1876. In 1887 he and his wife came to Portland, where he took the principalship of a denominational academy. A few years later this school amalgamated with others to found Walla Walla college. About this time Mr. Starbuck was ordained a minister, serving actively in this capacity until advancing age demanded his retirement. From 1897 to 1901 he served as a member of the faculty of Walla Walla college, returning from there to take up work with the Book and Bible house of the denomination in Portland. He was the builder of Central Seventh-Day Adventist church in this city and held various official positions connected with the Oregon conference of the denomination.

He was the son of Elisha and Polly Ann Haughey Starbuck and was born in Clinton county, Ohio, November 11, 1843. Three children were born to him and his wife, their eldest son, Elmer, dying at the age of 20 years. Surviving are his aged widow, crippled as the result of a broken hip six months ago; a son, Dr. A. B. Starbuck of Dallas, Oregon, and a daughter, Edith Starbuck of Portland. Three sisters and a brother also survive: Mrs. Sarah Ward of Falls City, Mrs. Polly a Frizzell of Portland, Mrs. Laura Ruble of Centralia and F. E. Starbuck of Portland.

Mr. Starbuck came to Oregon in 1863, driving a horse team all the way. After living a while in the Waldo hills, they purchased a farm in the Eola hills west of Salem. There he met Almira Gibson, who crossed the plains with her parents from Illinois by ox team in 1852. They were married July 12, 1871.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10:30 from the Sunnyside Seventh-Day Adventist church, East Forty-third and Washington streets. Interment will be in Lone Fir cemetery.
