Civil War Brigadier General. Secretary of State of Wisconsin. Governor of Wisconsin. Commander of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry of the Iron Brigade, wounded July 1, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg losing an arm.
He returned to Madison after the war, married and had three children. He became secretary of state from 1864 to 1866 then served three terms as governor. In his later years he was a diplomat in Liverpool, Paris, and the U.S. Ambassador to Spain.
