Trader, Peace Mediator. He was born in Rudkøbing on the island of Langeland. From the age of 14 he had been on board ships in the East Indies trade. In 1835 he settled on the island of Lombok where he created a commercial enterprise, but frequent fights between the local rajahs forced him to flee to Bali. Thanks to good relations with the Balinese rajahs he was able to create a flourishing business in the town of Kuta exporting local products including rice, spices and beef and importing weapons and textiles. During the 1840s Dutch expeditionary forces made constant attacks on Bali, and heavy fights between the Dutch and the Balinese defenders ensued. Only thanks to the mediation of Lange was peace finally restored for which he was granted an honorary title by Rajah Kassiman and rewarded by the Dutch king William III with the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He never returned to Denmark, but he sent many objects of local art to the Royal Ethnographic Museum in Copenhagen, and king Frederik VII of Denmark awarded him the Golden Medal of Merit. He died at the age of 48, possibly poisoned, without having ever married, but he had three children with Balinese women, and his many descendants include the sultans of Johore.
