Civil War Union Brigadier General, Idaho Governor. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a lawyer for the Illinois Central Railroad when he was appointed Colonel in command of the 29th Illinois Infantry Regiment. In 1862, he was promoted Brigadier General in command of the 43rd Illinois Infantry Brigade that participated in the Tennessee and Mississippi campaigns. For leadership and dedication to duty, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he resumed legal practice and in 1876, President Ulysses Grant appointed him the seventh Governor of the Idaho Territory, serving until 1878.
