Civil War Union Brevet Major General. At the start of the Civil War, he volunteered and was commissioned a Captian in the 12th Illinois Infantry in 1861. Promoted Colonel in April 1862, he participated in the campaign on the Tennessee River to Fort Henry, led his regiment at Fort Donelson, Shiloh and distinguished himself at Corinth. In December 1863, he was promoted Brigadier General in charge of the organization of colored troops in Tennessee and Kentucky. By January 1864, he had raised a force of 17,000 men and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers. For the remainder of the war, he commanded a post in Memphis and in the district of Talladega, Alabama. From 1867 to 1869, he was assessor of Internal Revenue for the district of Utah and in 1872, he established himself in Chicago as a banker and stock broker.
