Civil War Union Major General. Prior to the Civil War, he was a successful businessman and a former State of Maine Senator. In 1861, he was commissioned a Colonel in command of the 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry known as the "Iron Brigade". His regiment saw significant action at the Battle of Bull Run, the Battle of Fredericksburg and he was promoted Brigadier General in the November 1862. Given command of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division I Corps, he led at the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg in 1863. In March 1864, he was given command of the 1st Brigade, 4th Division, V Corps and led his corps in the Battle of the Wilderness. He led the division in the Overland Campaign, at the Siege of Petersburg and was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on August 5, 1864. At the Battle of Globe Tavern on August 21, 1864, he was seriously wounded and was forced to leave field command. He spent the remainder of the war as an administrator and resigned from the Army in June 1865. He died of a stroke, due to complications form his war injuries.
