Director, Producer, Actor. For 30 years, Putch directed a summer stock theater called the Totem Pole Playhouse, at Caledonia State Park in southern Pennsylvania, near Gettysburg. Putch died of a heart attack while in Syracuse, N.Y. just before the opening of a play he was directing his wife in ''The Showoff'' at a Syracuse theater. His wife, actress Jean Stapleton, continued to perform the show in honor of her husband. The movie "Route 30" written and produced by his son, John Putch, is loosely based on his father's life and career.
