Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Minnesota Governor. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in Company A, 5th Minnesota Infantry and in one year became Colonel in command of the regiment. In this position he served in more than twenty battles, including those of Farmington, Corinth, Siege of Vicksburg, the Red River Expedition, Nashville and Mobile, Alabama. For gallant and meritorious service in the Battle of Nashville, Tennessee, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in December 1864. After the war, engaged in the grain trade, served as a Minnesota State Senator, 1871 to 1875 and was elected Governor of Minnesota, serving 1882 to 1887.
