US Senator, 3rd Iowa Governor. Elected as Governor of Iowa, serving from 1854 to 1858. Elected as a Republican to the United States Senate from Iowa, serving from 1859 to 1869, when ill health forced his resignation. He was a member of the US Senate throughout the entire length of the Civil War, and was a member of the failed 1861 Peace Commission that unsuccessfully attempted to avert the war.
