US Congressman. During the Civil War he served in the 106th New York Volunteer Infantry, rising from Private in Company E to 2nd Lieutenant in Company G, serving from October 10, 1864 to June 22, 1865. He was elected as a Republican to represent Iowa's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1899 to 1907.
