Charlotte Ex-Soldier is Commended for Heroism

Former Army Cpl. Robert W. Simril of Charlotte has been awarded the Commendation Ribbon for his heroism during a fire which raked the 49th General Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, May 5, 1949.

The medal was received here today by Mr. Simril, who is now a patient in Mercy Hospital.

The citation accompanying the ribbon sent to Mr. Simril by Army secretary Gordon Gray, said that it was awarded for "Meritorious achievement." The citation reads as follows:

"Corporal Simril, medical department, distinguished [himself] by meritorious achievement [fight]ing a fire at the 49th General Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, on 5 May 1949. After issuing instructions for combatting the fire and safeguarding the adjacent buildings and property, Cpl. Simril with another enlisted man entered the flaming third floor of the nurses' quarters to insure that all occupants had evacuated the building. While preforming this miss[ion] the two enlisted men heard a moan. In the face of flames and intense heat, and without regard for his personal safety, accompanied by his comrad, Corporal Simril crawled on his stomach down a hallway, through the blinding smoke, to a point where a nurse was found lying in a semi-conscious state. With the assistance of his companion, Corporal Simril dragged the nurse back through the hallway to the stairs where she was carried to safety. Corporal Simril's courageous actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service."

Mr. Simril is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Simril of Rt. 7, Charlotte.
