U.S. Senator, Connecticut Governor. Born the son of U.S. Congressman Simeon Baldwin, he graduated from Yale College in 1811, studied law at the Litchfield Law School, in 1812, was admitted to the bar in 1814 and commenced to practice in New Haven, Connecticut. He was a member of the Connecticut State Senate, (1837 to 1838) and a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1840 to 1841). In 1844, he was elected as a Whig the 32nd Governor of Connecticut, serving until 1846. After his term, he was elected as a Whig to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Jabez W. Huntington, serving (1847 to 1851). His last political position was in 1861, as a member of the peace convention held in Washington, D.C., to devise means to prevent the impending Civil War. American founding father Roger Sherman was his grandfather and Connecticut Governor and Chief Justice Simeon Eben Baldwin was his son.
