Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was mustered in as a Corporal in Company A, 45th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on August 16, 1861. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery during the Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, Virginia on July 30, 1864. In that battle his regiment was thrown in the huge crated caused by Union forces exploding tons of gunpowder under Confederate lines. In the Confederate counter attack, the color-bearer of the 6th Virginia Infantry attempted to plant the regiment's battleflag at the top of the crater's parapet. Corporal Hogan shot the rebel, and took possession of the flag. He was awarded his Medal for his act on October 1, 1864. He would served out the rest of his three-year term of enlistment, and was honorably mustered out when it expired on October 20, 1864. After the war he moved to Kansas, working as a farmer and as an employee of the Kansas Salt Company.
