Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Woodstock, Ohio, he served as a Private in Company A, of the 66th Ohio Infantry, Union Army. In actions at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Virginia, on May 2, 1863, Private Cranston with four other comrades voluntarily went out to the enemy's line under heavy fire and brought in a wounded Confederate officer. For extraordinary valor, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on December 15, 1892. He remained in the 66th Ohio Infantry for the rest of the war and rose to the rank of Captain. After the war, he moved to Kansas and was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives from the 28th District, serving (1889-91). He died at the age 66 in Parsons, Kansas.
