Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on July 24, 1865 for his actions as a private with Company H, 1st Nebraska Veteran Volunteer Cavalry, US Army. on May 12, 1865, at Gilman's Ranch, near Fort Kearney, Nebraska. It was there where his unit fought in a skirmish with the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians on the Overland Trail. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Gallantry in defending Government property against Indians."
