Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. Before the Indian Wars, he tried to enlist for the Civil War at 15 and was refused because of age. He was later successful and enlisted in late 1863, serving with Company C of the 83rd Pennsylvania Infantry until he was mustered out on 28 June 1865 while still a private. He then served during the Indian Wars with the Plains Indians as a Corporal in Company A, 3rd United States Infantry. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery near Fort Dodge, Kansas on September 2, 1868. His citation reads "While detailed as mail courier from the fort, voluntarily went to the assistance of a party of 4 enlisted men, who were attacked by about 50 Indians at some distance from the fort and remained with them until the party was relieved." He was the Last Union Veteran of the Civil War to be buried in Howard County, Nebraska.
