U.S. Congressman. He attended Burlington Military College (1864-65), graduated from the Lebanon Law School, in 1871 and commenced the practice of law in Nashville, Tennessee. Moving to Louisiana, he had sugar plantations in May Parish and was a Colonel in the Louisiana Militia, in 1876. In 1878, he successfully contested as a Democrat the election of Chester B. Darrall to the Forty-fifth Congress and was reelected to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he returned to Tennessee, continued the practice of law, was chairman of the Davidson County Democratic executive committee, (1886-94) a member of the Nashville City Council, (1900-04), president of the Tennessee State bar association, (1901-02) and general insurance counsel of Tennessee, (1903-07). He also was Tennessee State warden of the department of game, fish and forestry, (1903-13), general counsel of the National Association of Game and Fish Commissioners of the United States, (1905-12), president of the Tennessee counsel of the St. Louis & San Francisco Railroad, (1907-110 and chief game warden of the United States, (1913-14).
