US Congressman, Senator. Educated at public schools, he worked as a grocer’s clerk as a boy and later in the engineering department of the City of Albuquerque, New Mexico. He traveled to Washington in 1917, with Senator Andrieus A. Jones and served as clerk in the office of the Secretary of the United States Senate, (1917-20). He graduated from the law department of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., in 1920, was admitted to the bar, commenced to practice law in Albuquerque, New Mexico and was a member of the New Mexico State House of Representatives, (1923-24). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-second and Seventy-third Congresses, serving until 1935. Not seeking re-nomination, he was elected as a Democrat to the US Senate in 1935, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Bronson M. Cutting and served until his death at age 74.
