US Congressman, Alabama Governor. He graduated from South Carolina College, in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar and opened a private law practice in Alabama. He was a member of the Legislative Council for the Alabama Territory, (1818-19) and the Solicitor of the First Judicial Circuit of the State of Alabama, (1819-21). He was also a member of the Alabama House of Representatives. (1822-23, 29-30) and court judge for the Alabama Third Judicial Circuit, (1823-25). In 1831, he was elected as a Wing the Governor of Alabama, serving until 1835. During his term as governor, the state bank was expanded and the first railroad was completed in Alabama. After leaving office, he served as Presidential Elector, (1836-40) and elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving (1847-49). From 1849, until his death at age 66 he was a U.S. District Judge for Alabama.
