US Congressman. Born near Gallatin, Tennessee, he had an elementary education and was active as a merchant. During the War of 1812 he served as a captain in the 24th Regiment, US Infantry, and was brevetted a major before his honorable discharge in 1815. In 1826, with no law degree or prior political experience, Desha ran as a Jacksonian to represent Tennessee's 5th District in the US House of Representatives; he was elected to the Twentieth and Twenty-First Congresses, serving from 1827 to 1831. He refused to seek a third term and moved to Mobile, Alabama, where he resumed his career as a merchant until his death. He was the younger brother of US Congressman and Kentucky Governor Joseph Desha.
