PRINCETON — A prominent community, business and civic leader of Princeton, Mr. Andrew Lewis "Andy" Clark Sr., 89, of Indian Rocke, Princeton, died early Thursday morning, January 13, 2011 at Princeton Community Hospital.
Born May 19, 1921 at Mt. Hope, he was the son of the late Elmer and Hettie Craddock Clark.
Mr. Clark was a graduate of Mt. Hope High, and West Virginia University, School of Engineering in 1947. He served his country proudly during World War II with the Signal Corps. as a 1st Lieutenant, while serving in the Pacific with the U.S. Army.
Mr. Clark was an outstanding athlete both in high school and college, playing on the WVU varsity football team for three years.
Mr. Clark is president of Mercer Motors and of Andy Clark Ford & Lincoln of the Courthouse Road in Princeton. Mr. Clark was the former President of the Prince Corporation (Princeton Shopping Center), a past Director of Princeton Bank & Trust Company, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Va., Fifth District.
Mr. Clark was a prominent figure in Southern West Virginia and the region. Mr. Clark was an invaluable member of the Princeton Community Hospital Board of Directors serving as President of the Board from 1973 until 1981. He served on the Board of Directors for WVU Alumni Association for many years. He was past president of the Princeton Chamber of Commerce, the Princeton Athens United Way, the Princeton Industrial Development Corporation, West Virginia Auto Dealers Association, the East River Volunteer Fire Department, the Ford Dealers Advertising Fund and the Ford Dealers Council.
Mr. Clark was appointed to the West Virginia Board of Regents for High Education in July of 1975.
Mr. Clark served in the West Virginia House of Delegates for two terms, from 1952 until 1956. He was elected as a Delegate to the National Democratic Convention 1964 and 1968.
Mr. Clark had been honored by numerous organization, civic groups and colleges and universities.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Caroline Brown "Brownie" Clark; a son, Andrew L. "Drew" Clark Jr.; along with his sister, Elizabeth Spheen; and a brother, Elmer Clark.
Survivors include two children, Terry Alston Clark Graham and husband Rick, George William "Scooter" Clark; daughter-in-law, Colleen Witt Clark, all of Princeton; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mr. Clark's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 15, 2011 from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Father William Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery.
