He was an editorial-proofreader for several Minnesota newspapers, (1895-96), was a clerk in freight houses until 1919 and employed as a street sweeper for Hennepin County, (1919-42). In 1945, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-ninth Congress and served until his death at age 71.
