U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Princeton College in 1857, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1861 and commenced to practice law in Freehold, New Jersey. He was a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly, (1860-62) and served as a Brigadier General of the New Jersey Militia, in command of Camp Vredenburgh, during the Civil War. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving (1867-71). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was prosecuting attorney of Monmouth County New Jersey, from 1873, until his death at age 53.
