US Congressman. A lawyer, he was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1820 after graduating from the Trenton Academy. He served two stints in the New Jersey State Legislature, the first being in 1831; the second from 1833 to 1835, when he served as Speaker of the State House. He was elected as a Democrat to represent New Jersey as an At-Large Delegate to the United States House of Representatives, serving a single term from March 4, 1839 to March 3, 1841.
