Hall of Fame Professional Football Player. For ten seasons (1956 to 1965), he played at the defensive end and guard positions in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Born Herbert William Gray, he attended Baytown Lee High School and played collegiate football at the University of Texas; while with the Longhorns, he achieved All-American and All-Southwest Conference honors (1955). Gray was selected by the Baltimore Colts during the 5th round of the 1956 NFL Draft, but instead signed with Winnipeg of the CFL and would establish himself as one of the most dynamic players of his era. He was a key member of four Grey Cup championship teams (1958, 1959, 1961 and 1962), earned All-Conference Defense End recognition six-times (1957 to 1962), All-Conference Offensive Guard status in 1965, All-Canadian Defensive End in 1962, and was recipient of the Schenley Most Outstanding Lineman Award in 1960 (becoming the first defensive player to receive the honor). Following his playing career, he worked in the cement industry. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1983, named to the Texas Longhorns Hall of Honor in 1983, and was a charter member of the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame in 1984. Gray was named the Winnipeg Defensive Player of the Half Century.
