Actress. Best known for her stage roles in "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Hunchback." She came from a London theatrical family, and took to the stage without any training to save her family from financial ruin. On a tour of the US she met and married one of her chief admirers – Pierce Butler, whose grandfather had signed the Constitution. They settled in Georgia where he had inherited a large plantation. She was appalled by the conditions under which the slaves lived and worked, and kept a diary of this time which was later published to support the cause of the Union. She and Pierce Butler later divorced. Her grandson was novelist Owen Wister, author of "The Virginian".
