Author. He was a 19th century French historian, who is credited as the originator of the scientific approach to the study of history in France and publishing his finds. Born Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges, his education included studying at the École Normale Supérieure and the French school at Athens in 1853. At that point, he began directing excavations at Chios in Turkey. From 1860 to 1870 he was professor of history at the faculty of letters at University of Strasbourg before becoming a lecturer at École Normale Supérieure in 1870, professor at the University of Paris in 1875, chair of medieval history at the Sorbonne in 1878, and the directorship of the École Normale in 1880. In 1864 he published his masterpiece, which was based on an in-depth knowledge of texts of ancient historians and poets, "The Ancient City." This was one of his many publications including his finds at Chios. Modern-day critics have found errors in his work. Many of his publications have been translated to English. A new French edition of "The Ancient City," with an introduction by François Hartog, was published in Paris in 1984.
