Poet. Born in Reims, France, he was a student attending the Lycee Louis le grand in Paris, when he founded the symbolist Théâtre d' Art in 1890. He founded the review Vers et Prose in 1905, serving as editor through 1914. By 1912 his influence among symbolists and the avantgarde was so strong that he was bestowed the title "Prince of the Poets" by a peer. He is probably best known for his Ballades, written in prose paragraphs constructed to emphasize the rhythm and assonance over rhyme. He published his first collection in 1896, and eventually they were collected in the Ballades françaises in 17 volumes published between 1922 and 1958. He died at age 88 in Paris.
