U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and commenced to practice law in Williamston, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina State constitutional convention in 1835, member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1840-42) and member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1844-45). In 1845, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress, serving until 1847. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of a commission to codify the North Carolina State laws in 1851. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1855-58). He was then appointed United States judge of the district of North Carolina by President James Buchanan, serving until the secession convention of North Carolina, in 1861. During the Civil War, he served as a Confederate judge, (1861-65). Moving to Virginia, in 1869, he continued to practice law until his death at age 67.
