Jazz Musician. Born in Bunkie, Louisiana, he was one of the most influential drummers of early Jazz. He is credited for pioneering the use of brushes, drum solos in Jazz and had some of the best technique of the era. After serving in the US Army during World War I, he began his career playing in bands with Papa Celestin, Charlie Creath, Doc Cooke, Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines. During the 1930s, he was a fixture in the Chicago jazz scene recording and performing with artists to include Carroll Dickerson, Roy Eldridge, Mezz Mezzrow and Sidney Bechet. In 1941, he moved to Los Angeles, where he led and played in a series of bands until he retired in 1970.
