Husband of Dolores McAnaa Pheiffer. Father of Patrick Pheiffer and Dolores (Terri) Therese (Pheiffer) Smith. Grandfather of Tanya Smith. Brother of Frances and Florence. Son of MaryAnn Cusworth and Joseph Pheiffer, Sr.

Joe was the CAAU champion for the steeplechase and 5-mile runs in 1929 and 1930. Apparently, he did not attend high school. He attended Grinnell College from 1931 to 1934, and received a BA degree in Psychology and Business Administration. While there, he was the Captain of the track team and was the Missouri Valley and State Collegiate 1-mile and 2-mile champion in 1934.
He was a social worker for State of Iowa (Des Moines) before moving to Chicago and working as a production tracer for the Teletype Corporation. He and Dolores Claire McAnaa were married on June 26, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, at Old St. Stephen's Church.
Joe served in the Army from February 17, 1943, to September 7, 1946. He was appointed Captain, Infantry of the US Army, on June 11, 1946. (231st AAA Searchlight Battalion). He was an instructor in the Army, "He trained new men in military customs and later in use of artillery and then in fighter Searchlight tactics. Was responsible for administration, supply and management of 108 men." He was 5 foot 3 1/4" tall, weighed 105 pounds and had dark brown hair.
After his Army service, Joe returned to his position at Teletype and then joined the Western Electric Company in Chicago, as a personnel counselor in the Hospital and Health Service Department.
He was an active member of the American Numismatic Association.
