US Congresswoman. Born at the Tullahassee Mission, Creek Nation, Indian Territory Oklahoma, she became the second woman to serve in the United States Congress and the first from the State of Oklahoma. She began her career working as a clerk at the U.S. Indian Office in Washington, D.C., (1873-79). Returning to Indian Territory, she taught school and established the Nuyaka Mission in 1882. Robertson was chosen as supervisor of Creek Indian schools, serving (1900-04), when President Theodore Roosevelt appointed her Postmaster of Muskogee, Oklahoma, serving (1904-13). Concerned about the direction of American society, she ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and was elected as a Republican to the 67th Congress, serving (1921-23). During her term, she became the first woman to preside over the House of Representatives. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, she was appointed in charge of the Veterans Hospital in Muskogee, Oklahoma. She died at age 77 in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
