U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Wesleyan University Connecticut, in 1923, was editor of the Granite Monthly, clerk of the Connecticut State Senate and aide to US Senator George Moses. He attended the George Washington University law school, was admitted to the bar in 1928 and commenced practice in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, (1923, 1943, 1945). In 1947, he was elected as a Republican to the Eightieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1954. In 1954, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to complete the term caused by the death of Charles W. Tobey, was reelected and served until his resignation in 1974. He died of cancer at age 88.
