U.S. Congressman, New York Governor. Together with his father Benjamin B. Odell Sr., he became successful in the ice business of Newburgh, New York. He dropped out from Columbia College in 1877, entered politics and represented the seventeenth district of the Republican New York State Committee for 10 years. In 1895, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1899. After leaving Congress, he was elected as a Republican the 34th Governor of New York, serving 1900-04. After leaving office he was president of the Newburgh Chamber of Commerce and resumed his previous business interests until his death.
