U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Immigrated to the United States in 1838, he settled in Wyoming County, New York and moved to Kentucky, in 1843. He graduated from Transylvania University, in 1846, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1867, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1875. He was a member of the commission to define the boundary line between Maryland and Virginia, in 1876, when elected to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 68.
