US Congressman. Prominent Vermont businessman and civic leader. Attended local schools. Employed as store clerk in Philadelphia. Returned to Fairfield to succeed father in running family farm. Married Caroline Farnsworth (born May 20, 1819), 1837. Six children: Deborah (Dolly), 1838-60; Helen K., 1840-58; Joanna F., 1841-60; Laura, born 1844, who moved to Denver, Colorado after her marriage; Charlotte, born 1844; Anna M., 1847-65. Moved to St. Albans to become Cashier of Vermont National Bank, 1857. Rose to become bank President. A Democrat, he served as delegate to Vermont constitutional conventions in 1843, 1850, and 1857, and was assistant secretary of 1843 meeting. Vermont House, 1845, 1850-52. As partner in Barlow, Sanderson and Company successfully invested in western states overland stage routes, 1860-83. Successful operator of rural mail routes (Star Routes which became source of scandal in Garfield administration). Investor in Welden House Hotel of St. Albans, Southeastern Railway of Canada and Northern Vermont Railroad. President, Vermont and Canada Railroad, Director, Central Vermont Railroad. Chairman, St. Albans school board. Became Republican at outset of Civil War. President, St. Albans village, 1860-67. Franklin County Treasurer, 1860-67. Vermont House, 1864-65. Vermont Senate, 1866-68. Lost Republican nomination for Congress in 1878 to William W. Grout. Ran as nominee of Greenback party and elected with support of Democrats, serving March 4, 1879 to March 3, 1881. Did not run for reelection in 1880. Declared bankruptcy after failure of railroad investments in economic downturn of 1883. After bankruptcy continued to manage investments that were not part of asset liquidation to settle debts. Moved to Denver shortly before his death. Remains returned to Vermont for burial.
