Daniel M. Hulse was born to William Y. Hulse and Lucretia Millspaugh Hulse. His mother died when he was an infant, and his father married Maria Millspaugh.

After the Civil War, Daniel moved from Penn Yan to Canandaigua, held various jobs in the transportation, hotel, and grocery businesses, then became a postal clerk, ultimately becoming the deputy postmaster in 1880.

He served as commander of the Albert H. Murray G.A.R. Post No. 162, was a village trustee, a member of Canandaigua Lodge No. 294, F. & A. M., and a member of the A.O.U.W.
